Protecting people in the workplace is more important today than ever. More and more substances are recognized as hazardous to the health of you and your employees. Therefore, the avoidance of contact with hazardous substances should be sought.

In the laboratory area, substances are used which require protective measures during use, the risk coming from inhalation of harmful vapors. In particular Acid and plating baths (silver, copper, gold) and isopropanol are some examples.

Since isopropanol is highly flammable and often causes allergies, this must be extracted with a fume cupboard, which is spark resistant to prevent possible ignition.

According to the Isopropanol data sheets, appropriate exhaust ventilation must be available when working with the substance. Since isopropanol is heavier than air, it must be extracted at a low level in a cabinet. Therefore a extractor hood is not suitable.

Our cabinet operates at very low noise levels and therefore negates the need for further ear protection.

The extractor cabinet is approved according to IECEx II 3G/- Ex h IIA T60 °C Gc.

What are the risks of isopropanol?

First of all, isopropanol is a flammable solvent. Therefore, it is subject to the Chemicals Prohibition Ordinance and may not be sold to private individuals. Detergents and disinfectants containing isopropanol should never be stored or stored within reach of children. There has to be particular caution with any vapors of the solvent as these can easily be narcotic and cause irritation to the eyes and mucous membranes this is also shown in the excerpt from the data sheet:

Health hazard

Inhalation or ingestion may result in adverse health effects

Causes serious eye irritation (H319)

Dizziness, headache, drowsiness to loss of consciousness or other brain dysfunction may occur (see also H336)

May irritate the skin, respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract

Temporary complaints such as headache, dizziness, nausea, difficulty concentrating can occur

May cause health disorders such as cardiac arrhythmia, liver damage, nerve damage, kidney damage

Fire and explosion protection

Keep supplies to a minimum in the laboratory, keep them protected against flame and heat.

Keep away from sources of ignition, do not smoke, avoid open flames, do not splash on hot surfaces,

Creeping vapors can also be ignited at greater distances.

Only work in the fume hood, keep the sash closed.

The fan in the fume cupboard must be designed for at least zone 2 spark resistant.

Why are extractor cabinet needed in the lab?

Extractor cabinet protect you and your employees in the laboratory from exposure to hazardous substances by:

·         Retain gases, aerosols and dusts effectively

·         Shield against splinters and splashes

·         Prevent the concentration of flammable hazardous substances

Health and Safety regulation

"Work involving the presence of gases, vapors or suspended solids in hazardous concentrations or quantities may only be carried out in fume hoods." The sashes must be kept closed during such work."
